Since being at college I have become more political and socially aware. Jessie introduced me to Adbusters and Buy Nothing Day. I loved the idea of Buy Nothing Day when I 1st heard it, but its even more relevent now.
Sale ads bombard the Tv and radio. People go to stores as early as 5am. Imagine if people out as much thought and effort into their relationships as they did in buying things for the people they have those relationships with. I also read David Sedaris' book about the holidays and found myself observing people. It all seemed so petty, like they were losing their soles in exchange for a few gifts. What about Thanksgiving? Does that mean anything or is it just a benchmark- 2 weeks till Christmas?
Speaking of Christmas, does it bother anyone else that places are already advertising Christmas stuff? I came home to find the houses in my neighborhood already had their lights up! 2 weeks till winter break, 2 weeks till Christmas. I wonder if I should just unplug my TV now.
